FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW CAN COUNSELING HELP ME?

There are too many benefits of participating in counseling to list! Counselors can provide support, problem solving skills and coping strategies for a wide range of issues. Counselors, being objective, can provide a different or a fresh perspective on a problem that you have been struggling with.

Benefits of counseling depend on your commitment and level of readiness. Some benefits can include, boosting self confidence or improving self esteem, improving communication skills, learning/finding new coping skills, attaining a better understanding of yourself, changing old patterns and developing new ones, or managing your emotions such as sadness, anger or other troublesome or difficult emotions you may be feeling. It is my privilege to come alongside you in your journey and we can discuss and address negative thinking patterns and how they effect your behavior and choices.

WHAT WILL THE FIRST SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Please arrive to the initial session 15 minutes before your session starts to complete intake paperwork. This paperwork will guide our discussion during the session. The initial session will include an assessment to discuss your history and needs for treatment. Additionally, during the first session we will have the opportunity to discuss how therapy will work, review office policies, privacy and confidentiality. This is the establishment of a potential therapeutic relationship so we will both work toward connecting so we can determine if this is a good fit. Most sessions, including the initial session are 45-60 minutes in length.

HOW LONG WILL I BE IN COUNSELING?

This is your process…you guide where counseling goes and your participation is key. If you want to make meaningful changes to your life and relationships, the length of treatment is based on your needs and what you want counseling to help with. I’ve had clients who have come for a few sessions, followed through with recommendations in between sessions, and felt better and moved on. I’ve also had clients come back into treatment as needed, or stay on to work on more complex issues. While it’s hard to predict how long counseling will last, I promise we won’t keep you for longer than needed.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

Yes, I am currently in network with Anthem, Aetna, CareSource, Medical Mutual, United Health Care and Molina. I bill these insurance companies directly for services provided. For other health plans not listed, I’m considered an out-of-network provider. I’d be happy to provide you with a "Superbill" to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement (individual counseling only). I offer a sliding fee scale for services based on income. Session fees are $90/session however, they can go as low as $75. We will discuss your cost for counseling at your initial session.
Special note: You will need to check your insurance benefits prior to your first session or you may be asked to pay out of pocket for your first session. Some questions you will want to ask include: What are my mental health benefits? What is my deductible? Does my deductible have to be met before insurance will cover my counseling sessions? How many counseling sessions Am I alotted? * If you plan to use your FSA or HSA card to cover sessions, please note that not all cards are acceptable via my square account. Please be prepared for this during your sessions to avoid any confusion. If your card is not accepted, I can provide a superbill for reimbursement.
ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO NOT USING INSURANCE?
You might elect to not use insurance for privacy reasons. Throughout treatment, your insurance company generally needs a mental health diagnosis to determine "medical necessity". When we run up against issues processing claims, insurance companies have required additional clinical information such as a treatment summary. Some of our clients have also expressed concerns about leaving a paper trail when applying for life, health or disability insurance. Again, I offer a sliding fee scale for private pay clients that is based on your income.

DO YOU OFFER TELEHEALTH SESSIONS?

Since the health crisis, I’ve made adjustments to my practice that include telehealth. I am a firm believer in connecting with one another face to face however, I can offer telehealth session after the first 1-3 sessions. This allows us to connect, for me to receive and review intake paperwork and establish guidelines for therapy. I will continue to monitor and assess the need to meet online as counseling progresses. It is my hope that we will be able to resume face to face sessions on a primary basis.
